This is the first ever production from Charlotte Conservatory Theatre. An amazing cast and crew on this one, with guest director Rob Lutfy at the helm!

The Adjusted Realists production of The Refugees ran at A.R.T./New York Theatres June 4-26, 2022, receiving wonderful responses from NYC audiences and critics. The production also featured an exciting partnership with Women for Afghan Women (WAW) in order to educate and inspire audiences to become more involved with local refugee issues.

Exit 30: A Pandemic Theater Detour

I'm co-directing and devising a massive ensemble experiment in COVID-era theater at Davidson College this July 2020. Here's the blurb:

In the age of COVID-19, the theater must ask: how can we gather as an audience but still keep each other safe? Exit 30: A Pandemic Theater Detour gives you a sprawling, immersive answer to that impossible question. Join a talented ensemble of Charlotte theater artists as they take over the evocative Davidson College campus with an intricate medley of pandemic performances, which weave together the joy, rage, humor, and justice that have defined the tumultuous summer of 2020. The best part? The entire show is conceived as a drive-thru, with occasional stops to get outside and watch a scene. Bring your car and your quarantine buddies, and journey from station to station, never coming closer than 20 feet to an actor or fellow audience member.

Sneak peek of The Refugees in Charlotte

My newest play The Refugees will receive two readings in the Charlotte area in advance of its full production at Davidson College in March-April of 2020. Actors from Adjusted Realists will be working with Davidson students in this sneak peek presentation! Contact me to reserve a spot.

AUGUST 21 at 7pm: Free Range Brewing in NoDa, Charlotte
AUGUST 24 at 2pm: Davidson College Barber Theatre

"In an imaginary city-state loosely based on ancient Greek myths, generational conflict erupts around how to handle the mass of desperate, uprooted migrants outside the city walls. Inspired by the current refugee crisis in southern Europe, and partially developed through on-the-ground faculty-student research, this new play takes dead aim at climate change, xenophobia, and what it costs us to compromise our ideals."

Get out the Vote Reading at Davidson College

10/19/2018

On October 29, just over a week before the US midterm elections I'll be directing a one-night-only reading of Barrie Keeffe's Sus at Davidson College, where I'm currently a visiting professor of theatre.

Both a powerful condemnation of institutional racism and a desperate urge to citizens to recognize the policy consequences of their votes, Sus follows a nightmarish incident resulting from British “sus” laws, or stop-and-search policies that allowed law enforcement officers to make arrests on the grounds of pure suspicion. Set on the eve of Margaret Thatcher’s election in 1979, the play follows the harrowing interrogation of a black man wrongfully arrested for murder. As the interrogation proceeds, the two white officers watch the polling results come in, betting that a Thatcher victory will fend off pressure from the left to eliminate “sus” laws.
Sus is an urgent reminder to "get out the vote" on November 6!

The Briefly Dead To Open at 59E59 Theaters

The Briefly Dead, formerly Memoriam at FringeNYC, will receive a brand new production at 59E59 Theaters November 16 - December 10. It's the longest run ever for an Adjusted Realists production, and we can't wait to see it come to life. For tickets, visit 59e59.org. The blurb:

"Good news: you actually can bring the love of your life back from the dead. Bad news: breakfast the next morning is really awkward. When it comes to the unexpected resurrection of his beloved wife Alcestis, King Admetos learns the hard way that the aftermath of a miracle ain't as peachy as we might assume.

A Doll's House, Part 2 for the Ancient Greek theater, The Briefly Dead reinvents a classic play with a sharply contemporary celebration of its powerful heroine returning home to settle the score. From playwright Stephen Kaliski and Adjusted Realists, the team behind Gluten! at 59E59 Theaters."

Beginning in February 2017, I'll be joining the Broadway production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as Resident Director. I'm thrilled to be working with director Jack O'Brien and an enormously talented cast (including Christian Borle as Willy Wonka) on this adaptation of one of my childhood favorites. Performances begin March 28!
